Praia Formosa Bay, located in the parish of Almagreira, constitutes a vast platform open to the sea, well marked by the presence of the natural elements of its excellent beach, of the Ribeira da Praia valley and of the high and beautiful slopes that limit and frame its contours. The bay configures an interesting coastal panorama that can be best appreciated from the Macela viewpoint, located on its westernmost tip.
Its clear and mild waters and its unique beach of white sand – the colour is due to the presence of limestone particles – turn this space into one of the islands’ most sought after bathing areas. The “Maré de Agosto” Festival, the oldest and most famous musical event of the archipelago, takes place annually at Praia Formosa.
Despite the important terrestrial natural assets, namely the geomorphological ones, the natural wealth that led to the bay’s classification as a Natural Reserve lies particularly in its marine components.
